Pitch Day was a day in which administrators from our school and the other district schools came to listen to our project ideas and give feedback. We got dressed up and created professional presentations to present our ideas, progress, and goals to the administrators. Pitch Day was very helpful because the administrators asked lots of questions and gave us plenty of feedback that helped us know what adjustments we needed to make.
The feedback we received helped us work out issues concerning liability, transportation, and timing. One administrator was concerned about the liability of the students and suggested we create a waiver or permission slip. Also, we were given the suggestion to have a nurse on site in case anything were to happen to any students. Another suggestion we were given was to look into talking with the bus garage to make sure transportation would be available after school, especially if we were interested in using this program with students from all three elementary schools. Finally, we were given suggestions about timing. There were lots of different opinions about the timing of our program. Some thought it was too intricate to do during school, while others thought it would be difficult to find students who were able to stay after school for the program. We plan on taking all of these suggestions into consideration and making adjustments to our program. Thanks to all the teachers and administrators who gave us feedback to help us make this program as successful as possible!

The SMILE Program is potentially a program in which high school students will be paired with elementary students, specifically those who are in need of a positive role model in their lives, based on similar interests. I am working alongside Mia Long and Austin Wood. We chose this project because we all had a desire to help the children of our community who are in need. Through this project, we hope that high school students will be able to positively impact the lives of elementary students by building a relationship with them and teaching them about citizenship.
Our goal in this project is to match each student with a high schooler who has similar interests and hobbies. We plan on doing this by having students fill out interest forms to find who the best matches would be. We feel that if students are matched with someone they can get along really well with, they are more likely to be receptive and open with their match. After making matches, our goal is to have pairs meet at New Palestine Elementary School twice a month. In the first meeting, we would have fun games and activities set up for the students, and matches would also be free to roam the grounds and find something to do that they're both interested in. On our school grounds, we have tennis courts, soccer fields, baseball fields, a playground, a cross country course, and lots of open space where students can find what they're interested in and bond through that. In the second meeting, everyone would come together to volunteer and learn how to give back to our school and community. This would normally have to be on school grounds, but we did have the idea to try to go off of school grounds at some point in the future to do a bigger volunteering project. |
